A Top Girl Group’s Dilemma: Old Songs Go Viral While New Releases Struggle

This girl group's continuous comebacks have fallen flat, yet their songs from 6 to 7 years ago are suddenly making waves again

TWICE is a leading force among third-generation girl groups, and indeed, within the broader K-pop landscape. However, in recent years, despite their frequent comebacks, TWICE’s achievements have been cause for concern, as they’ve found themselves largely ignored by their domestic audience, consistently failing to make a mark on the Korean music charts.

For instance, their most recent comeback with “One Spark,” which saw TWICE swiftly dropping out of top rankings within a short time.

Yet, in a twist, even as their latest comebacks “flop”, TWICE’s older tracks seem to find new life, going viral online. The latest to join the resurgence is “Look at Me” from their 2017 album “Twicetagram.” Perhaps back then, their smash hit “Likey” was inadvertently overshadowing “Look at Me.”

“Look at Me” exudes the playful, energetic pop style reminiscent of TWICE’s early days. Coupled with cute, memorable choreography, the song quickly captivated audiences. Popular idols, such as IU, Winter (aespa), Sullyoon (NMIXX), and Leeseo (IVE), have all taken to covering its dance challenge.

This isn’t the first instance of an older TWICE song experiencing a resurgence. Prior to this, “Go Hard” from their 2020 album “Eyes Wide Open” also made a chart comeback, spurred by the song’s choreography leaving a lasting impression at the group’s concerts.
