“A Business Proposal”: predictable but fun

The new drama starring Ahn Hyo-seop and Kim Se-jeong is doing much better than expected.

The love story of a CEO and an employee, a man from a chaebol family and an ordinary woman has been dêicted countless times on the small screen, so this work seemed to be no different. However, even though it is childish, viewers can’t resist watching the next episode.

Shin Ha-ri, who works for GO Food, was a blind date-terminator for her friend Jin Young-seo. As usual, she goes on a blind date for her friend to ruin it, but unfortunately the opponent this time is Kang Tae-moo, the new president of her company. It is clear that it will be more difficult for her to get involved. Although she was firmly confident that she had ruined the date, she heard shocking news from Young-seo that “Kang Tae-moo wants to get married.” Tae-moo, who made an absurd proposal, also had his reasons. This is because Jin Young-seo, the only child of Marine Group, is an ideal contractual marriage partner, as he wants to stop his grandfather from arranging blind dates for him continuously. The problem is that Jin Young-seo, whom Tae-moo met, is not the “real Jin Young-seo.”

This is enough to predict how the drama will develop in the future. In any case, Shin Ha-ri‘s identity will be revealed, and Kang Tae-moo will continue his fake relationship with Ha-ri because of his grandfather. In the process of their “Office Romance” or “Cinderella Story,” they will encounter many situations together. Until the sixth episode, “A Business Proposal” is almost the same as many previous romantic comedies.

In a way, it can be called an “obvious development.” Nevertheless, the reason why many people are fascinated by this drama is because it does not try to hide the fact that it actively utilizes various clichés of a romantic comedy. Rather, the obvious clichés come as an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

Another great advantage is that the story unfolds very quickly. Shin Ha-ri‘s identity was completely discovered in four episodes, helping viewers focus entirely on their chemistry. There is no common villain who interferes with the love of the main characters, so it is a work that can be enjoyed without any burden. Focusing on comedy rather than romance also raises viewers’ interest, along with the witty lines and exaggerated comical situations.

The cast is also doing a spectacular job. Kim Se-jeong is performing so passionately that she is said to have created another legendary character following Do Hana in her previous work “The Uncanny Counter.” From exaggerated comical actions to heart-throbbing romance acting, the actress expresses everything perfectly. Ahn Hyo-seop also captures fans’ hearts with his manga-like visuals. Although the actor properly proves himself through the role of Kang Tae-moo, who is narcissist but clumsy sometimes. Needless to say, the tiki-taka chemistry between these two is impressive. The romance between Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah) and Cha Sung-hoon (Kim Min-kyu), the sub-couple, is also sweet enough to melt the coldest hearts.

It may be a series of predictable contents, but considering the charm and merits of this work, we can say “It’s predictable but fun.” The drama is predicted to be another hit for SBS after “Our Beloved Summer.”
