Woman Imprisoned For Blackmailing Actor For Years, “If You Don’t Pay Me, I’ll Make Sexual Assault Disclosure”

On January 11th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 22 sentenced woman A to 10 months in prison on charges of blackmailing and defamation.

The court stated, “Threatening the victim by reminding them that they are a well-known actor was enough to cause great fear”, adding “Taking advantage of this situation to exploit one’s property is a very heavy guilt.”

A reportedly threatened the victim, actor B, 79 times from 2019 to March 2020 via text messages, Kakaotalk and phone calls with the content, “If you don’t pay me, I’ll make a disclosure of sexual assault about you”, to extort 5 million won in cash.

Over the past two and a half years since 2020, A reportedly demanded 50 million won from B a total of 346 times. During this time, A’s extortion attempt failed because B did not respond.

A even contacted B’s agency and claimed that she was sexually assaulted by B so she was also accused of defamation. In addition, A is also facing charges of violating the Information and Communication Network Act as she spread false information about B on the official bulletin board of the drama starring B.

The court said, “Considering A’s sexual assault claim without specific details and lack of objective evidence as well as the fact that A consistently demanded monetary compensation for years without filing a criminal complaint, it is hard to determine that A was a victim of sexual assault”.

It is known that A had submitted an appeal against the sentence in the first trial.
