Why Park Seo-joon Won’t Join the Domestic Promotional Campaign for ‘The Marvels’?

Actor Park Seo-joon’s Hollywood debut film, “The Marvels,” is set to be unveiled to South Korean audiences on November 8

In “The Marvels,” which explores the second story of Captain Marvel Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), Park Seo-joon is expected to captivate the attention of the global audience by portraying the character of Yon-Rogg, the husband of Captain Marvel. Already, in previous teaser trailers, Park Seo-joon made a strong presence as the long-haired Yon-Rogg.

For a South Korean actor to appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production, Park Seo-joon follows in the footsteps of Soo-hyun in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) and Ma Dong-seok in “Eternals” (2021). Notably, Park Seo-joon’s involvement in “The Marvels” came as a result of a proactive casting call from director Nia DaCosta, well-known for her work on the JTBC drama “Itaewon Class,” which was streamed on Netflix in 190 countries worldwide.

Given Park Seo-joon’s popularity in South Korea and the broader Asian region, there is considerable anticipation surrounding his first MCU appearance. Fans both domestically and internationally are eagerly awaiting the release of the film.

However, it has been reported that Park Seo-joon will not participate in promotional events related to “The Marvels” due to the ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) that began on July 14.

The Hollywood actors’ union is on strike, demanding minimum wage increases, fair streaming residuals, and protection of actors’ image rights in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). As a result, prominent Hollywood actors such as Tom Cruise of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1” and Margot Robbie, the lead actress of “Barbie,” have chosen not to participate in promotional events in Japan.

Although Park Seo-joon is not a member of the Hollywood actors’ union, the majority of actors in “The Marvels” are affiliated with SAG-AFTRA. As a gesture of respect for their stance, he has decided not to engage in separate promotional activities.

However, the director Nia DaCosta and producer Mary Livanos will lead the promotional efforts. Previously, in an interview with the U.S. film magazine “Total Film,” they emphasized Park Seo-joon’s role, describing him as a “definite ally of Captain Marvel.” Director Nia DaCosta also plans to conduct future interviews with the South Korean press, including virtual meetings.
