What’s interesting is that there’s only one element that doesn’t suit the current thrill of “Reborn Rich” even though it is on the rise. It is the melodrama between Jin Do Joon and prosecutor Seo Min Young (Shin Hyun Bin). The drama did not properly portray what heart fluttering feelings they have for each other for them to be this close. Some affection had to be created through the process of gradually accumulating emotions, but viewers don’t feel much affection between the couple amid their cliche kiss scene, which was too stereotyped.
In fact, “Reborn Rich” makes viewers wonder if it needs the romance of Jin Do Joon and Seo Min Young. It is a story about returning back to life and getting revenge. Therefore, the power of the drama comes from how Jon Do Joon uses the future that he already knows to achieve his purpose in the fierce succession war between him, Chairman Jin Yang Chul and the owner of the Sun Yang Group. However, in the midst of such a tight fight between the upper-class family members, the sudden appearance of romance is somewhat too relaxing.
Some works can be strengthened by the melodrama, but some can have the opposite effect. In order for the melodrama to shine even in a revenge drama, it is only possible to draw a rough sketch of the characters’ love story in the narrative enough to penetrate the entire work. However, the love story with Seo Min Young alone in the midst of Jin Do Joon’s revenge seems awkward. In particular, it is difficult to find the character Seo Min Young attractive in this composition.
“Reborn Rich” is more intense than any other dramas aired this year. It is a drama that keeps the tension going without a break. That’s why not only the continuous rise in viewership ratings, but also the level of buzz is so high that memes are circulating here and there. In particular, it can be said that the overwhelming presence of Chairman Jin Yang Chul, who dominates the entire story, and the acting of Lee Sung Min, are the biggest factors that make “Reborn Rich” successful.
However, the most inappropriate story in “Reborn Rich” is the melodrama between Jin Do Joon and Seo Min Young. Since it’s a Song Joong Ki’s drama, melodrama elements may be indispensable, but in “Reborn Rich”, the power of his character Jin Do Joon is being drained by his melodramatic loveline. It is regrettable that Shin Hyun Been, who showed good acting and presence in “Hospital Playlist”, is unable to show her charm when portraying an awkward character like Seo Min Young. It is necessary to change the mindset that melodrama must be included in a K-drama like a comprehensive gift set, because it can be a hindrance instead.
