Viewers are concerned about “Revenant” ending as writer Kim Eun Hee often “killed” main characters in previous works

“Revenant” is coming to an end.

SBS’ Friday-Saturday drama “Revenant” (written by Kim Eun Hee/directed by Lee Jung Rim) is a Korean-style occult mystery drama about a young woman possessed by an entity and a professor of folklore who can see ghosts. Together they seek the truth behind mysterious suicides surrounding the city. It is about to end with episode 12 on July 29th.

“Revenant” maintained the viewership rating of 10% and succeeded in creating a solid fixed fan base even in the unpopular occult genre.

Unlike other occult works, which are mostly based on Western exorcism, “Revenant” distinguished itself by summoning Korean ghosts such as Agwi (starving ghost), Taejagwi (a baby ghost who died of hunger after being abandoned by their parents or a shaman carrying such a ghost) and Gaekgwi (the ghost of a man who died while staying abroad). At the same time, it made the story richer by eerily portraying human desires and evil deeds, which are scarier than ghosts.

Gu San Yeong (Kim Tae Ri), who was possessed by an entity, and Yeom Hae Sang (Oh Jung Se), a professor of folklore who can see ghosts, started teaming up to get rid of evil spirits. Police officer Lee Hong Sae (Hong Kyung) joined and brought in an investigative angle to the occult cases.

The drama’s success was also attributed to the well-developed chemistry between the main and supporting characters, all of whom delivered powerful performances and raised viewers’ immersion level.

However, viewers are concerned that the drama might end tragically for one of the main characters, as writer Kim Eun Hee has a track record of delivering unexpected twists, including character deaths, in her previous works.

The audience is engrossed in the final episodes, hoping for not only the successful eradication of evil spirits but also a happy ending for all three protagonists who each carry painful pasts and stories related to the malevolent spirits they are chasing.
