The tragedy of the Titan submarine is said to resemble an episode of this famous animated series from 25 years ago.

Currently, the world is shocked and saddened by the news of the Titan submarine, which was supposed to bring 5 passengers to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to see the wreckage of the iconic Titanic. However, the submarine lost contact with land after a few hours, leading to a tragedy.

This news has deeply affected director James Cameron, who had participated in 33 similar diving expeditions to gather material for the film “Titanic”.

At the same time, many netizens started to bring up an episode of animated series “The Simpsons”, claiming that it bears striking resemblances to the Titan disaster.

An episode of “The Simpsons” are said to have “predicted” the Titan tragedy

It’s worth noting that this episode was released in 1998, exactly 25 years ago, leading to conspiracy theories that the writers have “predicted” the recent tragedy.

In particular, according to the New York Post, this episode is the 19th episode of the 9th season of “The Simpsons”, in which two characters, Homer and Fairbanks, embarked on an oceanic expedition. In one scene, the characters unexpectedly discover the wreckage of a sunken ship, hiding a valuable treasure within it. After retrieving some of the treasure using the robotic arm of their submarine, Homer encounters a mishap when he gets stuck on coral.

At that time, the oxygen level in the submersible was at an alarming rate, and Homer was only able to broadcast a signal to his father, before going unconscious. Luckily, he was rescued and woke up on the hospital bed afterward.

Against the ongoing “theories”, however, Mike Reiss – writer and producer of the series – denied those claims, stating that there was no prophecy or prediction involved. He shared that the inspiration for the episode was the movie “Crimson Tide” starring Denzel Washington.

“We didn’t predict the future, we just did it (based) off that movie and 20 years later, something like that happened,” the writer-producer clarified. Mike Reiss was one of the passengers of the Titan touring the Titanic last year.

He also said he fell asleep on the journey – a point his wife, Denise, believed to also have happened on “The Simpsons.”
