Reasons Why Cha Eun-woo, Kim Young-dae’s Dramas Fail Despite Based On Popular Webtoons

The two dramas are failing in terms of ratings

Dramas based on webtoon’s, such as Netflix’s “Mask Girl,” “D.P.” “Doona!” and Disney+’s “Moving” have succeeded in achieving great results. However, among the dramas based on webtoons currently on air, ENA’s ‘Moon in the Day’ starring Kim Young-dae is facing failure.

“Moon in the Day”’s original webtoon is a hit with 700 million cumulative views. When the drama remake was confirmed, writer Hayum of the orginal webtoon revealed, “As a writer, I was also worried that “Moon in the Day” was not a good drama.”

The synchronization of “Moon in the Day” with the original has been recognized by webtoon fans. However, the main character’s career in their modern life have been changed from students to top star and fire rescue worker. As the setting changes, the drama might be able to attract new audiences, but fans of the original webtoon may feel rejected.

Since the show aired, the reaction has been sharply divided. The ratings are also low. “Moon in the Day” only hit the 2% rating in the 3rd episode and fell back to 1.5% in the 4th episode.

There’s another webtoon-based drama that viewers do not respond positively to, and that’s MBC’s “A Good Day to Be a Dog“. Its synchronization rate with the original was considered satisfactory. Park Gyu-young and Cha Eun-woo received praise for their perfect fit with their characters.

However, “A Good Day to Be a Dog” is currently in a state of delay with its ending postponed by two weeks due to two cancellations. The repercussions of these cancellations led to a continuous decline in viewership ratings.

In terms of success, webtoon-based works are divided. The key lies in blending elements that capture the hearts of original fans and attract new viewers.
