On January 10th, the Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 9 sentenced A, a woman in her 40s who was accused of violating the Stalking Punishment Act, to six months in prison and ordered A to complete a 40-hour stalking treatment program.

The court said, “The defendant is a first-time offender and does not seem to have any intention of harming the victims”, adding “The defendant committed stalking crimes, such as visiting the victims’ residence and pressing their doorbell, continuously and repeatedly”.

The court explained, “The defendant is suffering from mental illness and she seems to have committed the crime in a state of weakening mental and physical conditions due to the illness”, adding “The defendant’s residence is unclear, and there is a great concern about the possibility of reoffending as the defendant’s family cannot support treatment. Considering the defendant’s health condition, it seems necessary to prioritize treatment and education to prevent recurrence and detention.”

A was caught visiting the house of Rain and Kim Tae-hee in Yongsan-gu, Seoul 14 times from March 2022 to October 2022, and pressing the doorbell many times. Even after receiving a warning for a minor offense, A continued visiting the two’s home and knocking on the door on February 27th, 2023. In addition, A continued stalking the couple by following them to the beauty salon on April 7th, 2023.

Afterward, the prosecution demanded the court to sentence A to one year in prison and order A to complete a stalking treatment program at the final trial on December 8th, 2023.
