As Lee Seung Gi donated the 5.4 billion won he received from Hook, his past remark that money cannot buy happiness draws attention again.
Appearing on the entertainment program “Circle House” in March, Lee Seung Gi said, “Money does not always guarantee happiness”.
At that time, he confessed, “I grew up in a normal middle-class family. I may be earning less than people around me think, but my income is much higher than that of ordinary people”, adding “I’ve always questioned myself if I’m happy about making a lot of money since I was young, and I’m still wondering that.”
Lee Seung Gi emphasized, “When I talk to people who have lots of money, they also say things like ‘I’m happiest when I can chat with good people while eating delicious food’”, adding “Listening to such stories, I realize that money can certainly prevent misfortune, but it does not make you happy. I really want to tell everyone this”.
Noh Hong Chul, who also appeared on the program, agreed with Lee Seung Gi’s opinion.
Noh Hong Chul shared, “I made and spent more money than the price of my house. If I were someone else, I might have had a bad idea. However, I have enough experiences that I need at this age, and also energy that can be gained from communication”, adding “I recently had a back injury and had to stay home on my bed for a while, but I was so happy and thankful that my friends came and cheered me up.”
The conversation was brought up when Lee Seung Gi announced his decision to donate the entire amount of unpaid settlements he received from his agency Hook Entertainment (Hook) on December 16th.
Earlier, Hook released a position, saying they paid a total of 5.4 billion won, including 2.9 billion won in unpaid settlements, and 1.2 billion won worth of delayed interest. In response, Lee Seung Gi said, “I didn’t initiate the lawsuit to receive more money”, adding “Starting from the 5 billion won I received today, the rest will be delivered back to society in full amount after paying litigation expenses.”
He continued, “This is not what I just thought of in a day. The moment I decided to fight against Hook, I already decided to spend all the money I would get on helping advantageous people and those in need”, adding “The 5 billion won I received today is a really big and valuable amount of money to me. It contains my sweat during my teens, 20s and 30s… But if I could send this money to people who are suffering more difficulties, the happiness and value I get in return would be even more than that of 5 billion won”.
Lee Seung Gi has recently been in dispute with Hook. According to reports, he has made more than 10 billion won in profits from music activities over the past 18 years but did not receive a penny from his agency.
