MBC’s “True Story Expedition” Explained Reasons For Deleting VOD About Lee Sun-kyun’s Case “Tribute To The Deceased”
On the morning of February 4th, the production team of MBC’s “True Story Expedition” told OSEN, “The deletion of actor Lee Sun-kyun’s VOD on our broadcast only recently became known, but this was done immediately on the day of his death at the end of last year. After hearing actor Lee Sun-kyun’s sad news, the production team decided to delete the replay of the broadcast as a tribute to the deceased.”
In October last year, Lee Sun-kyun was booked on charges of marijuana use under the Narcotics Control Act and was investigated by the police. During the three summonses, Lee Sun-kyun was judged “negative” in all drug tests. MBC program “True Story Expedition” aired and VOD about Lee Sun-kyun’s drug case on November 23 last year. The broadcast also covered texts from A, the head of an entertainment establishment who threatened the deceased, which was previously known through another report.
However, Lee was later found dead in a parked car near a park in Jongno-gu, Seoul on Dec. 26 last year after completing the third round of police summons. He was 48. Suspicions of the police holding a coercive investigation were raised due to the sudden sad news, but the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, which was in charge of the investigation, denied it. However, a number of popular culture artists, including film director Bong Joon-ho, Jang Hang-joon, and singer Yoon Jong-shin, issued a statement on the 12th of last month calling for a thorough investigation into the death of Lee Sun-kyun, while criticizing the reckless reports of the investigation process. Since then, some have raised criticism, citing the belated deletion of broadcasts and reports dealing with the drug controversy of Lee Sun-kyun.
“The staff of “True Story Expedition” were also heartbroken to see the sad news on the day of the incident. After deliberation, all the producers decided to delete the portion of the broadcast. It is not true that the VOD on “True Story Expedition” was deleted due to statements made by the pop culture and arts community. Rather, the production team is surprised as the belated announcement of the deletion became a sudden controversy,” said an MBC official.
