Lee Soon Jae disagreed with Son Seok Gu’s “fake acting” remarks “Acting is originally fake”

Actor Lee Soon Jae also disagreed with Son Seok Gu’s “fake acting” remarks.

On July 31st, Long Black released actors Lee Soon Jae and Ji Joo Yeon’s interview.

In the interview, Lee Soon Jae mentioned Son Seok Gu’s “fake acting” remarks. Lee Soon Jae said, “Recently, someone said ‘fake acting’ and it became controversial. But acting is originally fake. Acting is making fake things look real.

Previously, Son Seok Gu caused controversy when he said “In the script, it said ‘whispering love’, but in that case, they should have given us microphones. Being asked to not whisper for real on the stage made me feel like I was doing fake acting” at the press conference for the play “Army on the Tree”.

Regarding this, senior actor Nam Myung Ryul strongly criticized Son Seok Gu, “Hahaha, I can only laugh. That arrogance. I just want to say that I’m not a rich person, nor someone outstanding. Seriously, even if you have to whisper with raw acting, you should think about acting in a way that allows 350 audiences to hear it well. If you didn’t have that concern when doing theater performances, then you should take back the word that you were going to do theater acting only. Just say, ‘After trying it (theater acting), I found that media acting suits me better.’ There are several actors who can fill 350 seats of the theater even when they whisper lines. If all acting is about portraying fictional characters, then it is absurd to define what real acting is.

Afterwards, Son Seok Gu appeared on JTBC’s “Newsroom” to clarify his controversial remarks. He confessed, “About 10 years ago, when I first started acting, I felt pressured to conform to certain standardized acting approaches while striving to become a good actor. Looking back, I don’t think that was truly the case. It was more due to my immaturity and stubbornness at the time. However, this experience became the driving force behind the realization that I should have my own style. Even now, when choosing roles, I think about this aspect a lot. Some of my remarks were misunderstood, possibly due to my use of inappropriate language, casually uttered as examples or in conversations with fellow actors. I personally thought it was understandable and have since reflected on it.”

Son Seok Gu revealed that he apologized personally to Nam Myung Ryul and that they resolved the misunderstanding, “I also wrote a handwritten letter to Nam Myung Ryul and apologized. He saw it and understood my feelings, responding with a letter. He will come to watch my play, too.”
