MBC’s new drama “Chief Inspector: The Beginning (tentative title)” (directed by Kim Sung Hoon, written by Kim Young Shin, created by Park Jae Beom, produced by Barunson Studio) is a prequel to MBC’s legendary drama “Chief Inspector”. “Chief Inspector” is a drama about “Korea’s Columbo” Choi Bool Am solving crimes. 880 episodes were broadcast from 1971 to 1989. “Chief Inspector” was greatly loved by the entire nation.
“Chief Inspector: The Beginning (tentative title)” showcases the charm of analog crime-solving, where innate senses, insight and persistence are used to solve crimes, providing a distinct catharsis for the younger generation and nostalgic enjoyment for those who remember “Chief Inspector”.
The production team includes director Kim Sung Hoon, known for films like “Confidential Assignment” and “Rampant”, writer Kim Young Shin, who contributed to dramas like “Kkondae Intern” and “The Veil”, as well as creator Park Jae Beom, who was involved in dramas such as “Good Manager”, “The Fiery Priest” and “Vincenzo”.
The lead actors, including Lee Je Hoon and Lee Dong Hwi, are expected to portray the youthful years of beloved characters. Lee Je Hoon plays the role of Park Young Han, depicting his fiery pursuit of justice and his battle against societal corruption. Lee Dong Hwi transforms into Kim Sang Soon, a dedicated and unyielding detective who eventually becomes a key figure in the police force.
The performances of emerging talents Choi Woo Sung and Yoon Hyun Soo are also eagerly anticipated. Choi Woo Sung’s character Jo Kyung Hwan possesses exceptional strength, who later becomes an ace at Jongnam Police Station. He is a solid and polite young man, but in the face of injustice, he becomes a “bulldozer” who won’t back down, aiming to follow the step of Park Young Han.

Meanwhile, Yoon Hyun Soo dreams of becoming a detective inspector, an elite with high specs, and plays the role of Seo Ho Jung at Jongnam Police Station. He is smart but full of excessive self-confidence, often making irreparable mistakes due to his foolishness, possessing a charming reversal charm. He faces a significant crisis in his life and confronts it with a strategy-oriented Park Young Han.
About his role, Yoon Hyun Soo commented, “When I was confirmed for the role of Seo Ho Jung in ‘Chief Inspector: The Beginning’, my grandfather was very pleased, which made me proud and happy.
