Korean Remake of “You Are the Apple of My Eye” Criticized for Casting Choices
As Jin Young and Dahyun are reported to be casted for the Korean remake of "You Are the Apple of My Eye", criticisms poured in.
On the morning of May 14, Xportnews reported that TWICE’s Dahyun was chosen to play the female lead Shen Chia-yi in the Korean remake of the film “You Are the Apple of My Eye”. The male lead, Ko Ching-teng, will be played by Jin Young (B1A4).
Dahyun is the first member of the girl group Twice to venture into acting since the group’s debut in 2015. Prior to this, Sports Donga reported that she would star in an independent feature film directed by Lee Seung-hoon, which follows individuals pursuing their dreams.
Dahyun’s co-star, Jung Jin Young, 32, is a member of B1A4 who is also well-known for his acting roles. Jin Young has played supporting roles in notable works such as “Moonlight Drawn by Clouds”, “Police University”, “Love in the Moonlight”, “The Dude in Me”, and “Sweet Home 2”.
In 2018, the Japanese version starring Yuki Yamada and Asuka Saito garnered attention but was criticized for being inferior to the original. The remake was described as lengthy, lacking in emotion, with bland performances, especially in scenes requiring deep inner feelings. It made slight changes to the friends’ relationships compared to the original but failed to convince viewers.
After the announcement of the main cast for the Korean version, debates ensued. Many viewers felt Dahyun’s appearance did not evoke the fresh, first-love vibe like Michelle Chen and doubted her acting abilities.
On Weibo, several viewers left critical comments: “Her appearance doesn’t fit the character,” “It seems Korean filmmakers are ruining my youth,” “They cast idols again. I have no issue with either of them, Jin Young has acted before, but neither seems fit for the roles, let alone expecting them to improve through acting skills,” “Choosing Dahyun surprises me, while Jin Young is 32, is he fit to play a student?”…
Meanwhile, some are looking forward to the pairing and left comments such as, “I think the female lead fits well. I don’t know about her acting skills, but Dahyun’s smile is friendly, and she could play the pretty, aloof schoolmate without makeup.”
As of now, JYP Entertainment, Dahyun’s agency, has yet to confirm this information.
On the other hand, “You Are the Apple of My Eye” is considered a classic of the school romance genre. The film, adapted from a novel of the same name, was released in 2011.
