IU expressed surprise at the age of Hyein, the youngest member of NewJeans.
On July 24th, NewJeans appeared on “IU’s Palette” of IU’s YouTube channel “IU Official” as a whole.
IU expressed her affection for NewJeans as a fan, “I’ve seen you from afar before. You were in the middle of the performance at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. I watched your performance from a distance. I was like, ‘NewJeans is here?’ And I really loved your performance. I had so much fun at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. Moreover, when I found out that NewJeans would go up on the stage, I felt that I was so lucky. I was like, ‘This is so fun.’“
NewJeans said, “We got a lot of energy from each other. We also had so much fun.” IU praised, “I could feel that. Not only at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, but every time you performed on stage, I could feel you giving positive energy to everyone who watched your performance.”
NewJeans members expressed their affection and respect for senior IU. The youngest Hyein confessed, “Not only do I listen to your songs a lot, but so do my members. So while we were on our way here, we listened to your song ‘Love poem’ and other songs of yours. But meeting you in person makes us so nervous.”
In response to Hyein’s cute confession, IU smilingly said, “My eyes locked with Hyein’s as soon as I exited my green room. Hyein was sitting straight, and I saw her eyes go huge immediately. She was staring at me like a cute little bunny. So once again, I could realize NewJeans is actually here. When I saw Hyein’s face, I felt so happy and delighted. I was grateful that you looked at me with those shining eyes.“
Meanwhile, IU expressed surprise, “There is one big parallel between me and Hyein. Number 2008. In 2008, I made my debut. And Hyein was born in 2008, right?“ She continued, “Back then, every time I went to the broadcasting station for my work, I always got, ‘A middle school student made her debut?’ I guess you are in my position where I was at the time, right?“
When Hyein said “I’m in 3rd grade in middle school“, IU expressed surprise over and over again, “I made my debut at age 16. But I guess Hyein made her debut when she was 15, right? You made your debut at a younger age than I did. As soon as I realized it, I was like, ‘Wow…’ This girl was born in 2008, but now she’s on ‘Palette’.”

IU expressed her sincere concern for junior NewJeans as a senior. When NewJeans explained that their new album has 3 title songs, IU worried, “Because there are 3 title tracks on the album, you must have worked 3 times harder than usual, right? You must have done a hard work. Wasn’t it difficult?“
Hanni shared, “We really enjoyed it. When we made our debut, we have four tracks in the first EP. And that album also has 3 title tracks. Even ‘Hype Boy’ has 4 different versions of MV. But I believe we enjoy all of the journeys of working on new songs and preparing for performances. We became more and more excited and wanted to present what we had prepared.“
IU said with admiration, “You had to work on 3 title tracks. And those are all dance songs. You even had to work on the choreography as well. Then you had to put a lot of energy into it. You might not have enough time to sleep. And you had to get ready for the MV filming and memorize the lyrics. I was worried that you wouldn’t be able to handle it all, but I’m guessing you’re all having fun and doing a great job.”
