Fans of “Breaking Bad” show worries that the Korean remake will “ruin” their favorite series

On February 14th, Korean media outlet The Hankyoreh reported that the crime series “Breaking Bad” would be getting a Korean remake.

According to the report, PD Park Bum Hoon of the production company JP E&M revealed in a phone call with The Hankyoreh that a Korean version of “Breaking Bad” is being produced, and that season 1 will be directed by Director Lee Chang Yeol. 

It is also said that season 1 is in preparation, and the remake has been planned for as far as season 4. However, other decisions such as coordinating the casting, the cast lineup, and the online video service (OTT) platform to be aired on have not yet been decided.

Nevertheless, the goal is to air season 1 around this time next year, at the earliest. 

On the other hand, “Breaking Bad” is an American drama which follows Walter White, a genius chemist who lived as an ordinary chemistry teacher. After getting a diagnosis of stage-three lung cancer, he entered the world of crime by manufacturing drugs to earn money for his family before he died. 

The series, which consists of 5 seasons, is considered a legendary work that has received as many as 16 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most prestigious award ceremony in the broadcasting industry.

When news of the Korean version of “Breaking Bad” was released, netizens showed explosive reactions.

Many fans who are looking forward to the remake expressed their excitement by saying, “I’m so excited to see how the Korean version will be produced.”

However, there were also some who raised voices of concern, leaving comments as “Will they be able to match the original with Korean sentiment?”, “It’s my favorite drama, but I’d be upset if the remake ruined it”, “It’s a matter of who will be casted for the major roles”, and “I’m worried.”

Meanwhile, director Lee Chang Yeol, who is in charge of directing the Korean version, is the director of the movie “A Song for My Dear”, which will be released in cinemas on March 8th.
