On January 10th, Red Velvet fans expressed worries over the comments of a foreigner on Seulgi’s SNS account.
An Internet user, believed to be a foreigner, has been leaving comments on Seulgi’s account in awkward Korean. This person created many accounts to comment on Seulgi’s posts, saying“I’m downstairs”, “The light is on”, “Seems like she’s with someone”, etc., as if they could see what Seulgi was doing.
What’s worse is that they even threatened the female idol with comments such as “Seulgi ah, you woke up? What are you doing? Don’t sleep too late. Stop texting BamBam. I’m really stressed out. Don’t chat with him late at night and before going to sleep”, “Don’t text him. And also NCT. Don’t love anyone, I’m still downstairs. You’re mine, I love you”, “Don’t be with anyone at night. I’m still somewhere in Gangnam. I’ll come to your place”, “I just come by your house at night but the lights were off”, etc.
Seeing such comments, fans were afraid that their stalking behaviors would create extreme discomfort and fear for Seulgi. Therefore, they are encouraging each other to report this person to Red Velvet’s agency SM Entertainment. Fans expressed their anger, saying “I captured the comments as evidence”, “It may be a lie, but I think the agency needs to find and confirm it to protect the artist’s privacy and give a hard warning”, “I feel unpleasant just by seeing it, Seulgi must feel very uncomfortable”, etc.
Although the Stalking Punishment Act has been in effect since October 21st, 2021, stalking crimes continue to occur.
On the same day, the courts sentenced a woman in her 40s to six months in prison on stalking charges after getting arrested for visiting Rain and Kim Tae-hee’s home and pressing the doorbell many times.
