BABYMONSTER’s Debut Already Embroiled In Controversies 

The debut teaser video for BABYMONSTER, BLACKPINK’s “sister group”, has been released

At midnight on November 24 (Korean time), YG dropped the first teaser for “Batter Up”, the debut MV of its latest girl group BABYMONSTER.

As confirmed earlier, the debut release of BABYMONSTER will consist of only 6 members, with “Little Jennie” Ahyeon absent due to health reasons. As Ahyeon is often considered the “ace” of the group, her absence causes a lot of mixed reactions, as people worry over a BABYMONSTER without her.

So far, the 20-second teaser hinted at a heavy street-style Hip-hop arrangement, which is accompanied by YG’s distinctive sounds. The 6 members appear extremely cool in outfits dominated by red and black tones, and from visual photos to the MV concept, everything follows a consistent theme. 

In addition, Pharita’s beauty stands out prominently. Additionally, Asa and youngest member Chiquita are also noticeable for their captivating moments. True to its name, “Batter Up” promises to be an energetic and dynamic musical piece.

Before this, the music production team for BABYMONSTER’s debut was also revealed. No longer with Teddy and the familiar The Black Label team, a member, ASA, can be seen in the credits for lyrics and composition, alongside Jared Lee, an American artist who previously worked on BABYMONSTER’s pre-debut song “Dream”. Chanhyuk (AKMU) and Hyun Suk (Treasure) can also be seen in the list of contributors.

However, Yang Hyun-suk was also spotted in the credits under the name “YG”, causing controversies. After his legal scandals in 2019, the former president of YG have been criticized by most Korean netizens, and so his appearance in BABYMONSTER’s debut track is not faring well with them. So far, many people have expressed opposition to Yang Hyun-suk’s participation, and even claimed that they’d no support the song

However, BABYMONSTER remains extremely popular in Korea. As the next girl group of YG after BLACKPINK and considered the future of YG, any move regarding BABYMONSTER becomes a focal point.

Would “Batter Up” overcome ongoing controversies and establish BABYMONSTER as the next “monster rookie”? Only time can tell.
