Accusations of Plagiarism Surround Jungkook’s “Seven” Due to Similarities with Fin.K.L’s “Time of Mask”

HYBE has not responded to this plagiarism controversy due to Bang Si Hyuk’s overseas business trip.

On August 22nd, Korean media reported that BTS Jungkook’s English single “Seven,” which previously held the No.1 spot on the Hot 100 chart, is facing allegations of plagiarism.

“Seven” is composed and written by Andrew Watt, Jon Bellion, Henry Walter, Theron Makiel Thomas, and Latto. It is suspected to have “borrowed a similar chord progression” for its main melody, which was used in the song “Time of Mask” by the girl group Fin.K.L, released in 2000.

“Time of Mask” is a b-side track from Fin.K.L’s special album ‘SPECIAL,’ composed by Yang Joon Young. An official involved in the matter stated, “Some renowned domestic songwriters have also expressed their stance that the two songs share strikingly similar harmonies.”

Composer Yang Joon Young has reportedly sent digital documents requesting a comparison of the chord progressions between the two songs to a key producer at HYBE Labels and is awaiting a response.

HYBE Labels is said to have provided a temporary written response, stating that the issue cannot be resolved at this time because “Bang Si Hyuk is currently on a business trip overseas.”
