BABYMONSTER Drops Teaser Reminiscent of Lisa’s Solo, Ahyeon Gets All the Attention?

Early today (March 28th KST), YG dropped a teaser for BABYMONSTER’s upcoming title track MV. “BLACKPINK’s little sister” is gearing up for a comeback with a 7-member lineup and their debut mini album BABYMONS7ER, featuring the title track “Sheesh”.

The 20-second teaser reveals some mysterious visuals and a powerful, explosive melody, quickly racking up over 1.2 million views in just half a day.

From the teasers, it seems BABYMONSTER’s concept this time is leaning towards a fancy and edgy vibe. But for BLACKPINK fans, the teaser might trigger some déjà vu as it feels oddly familiar, with just 20 seconds showing the mysterious footsteps of one member.

The “Sheesh” MV teaser seems to echo BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s solo MV “LALISA”, which dominated 2021. Using the already viral image of BLACKPINK for BABYMONSTER has stirred up debate among fans of both groups.

Netizens are questioning if YG is once again borrowing the iconic concept of BLACKPINK for BABYMONSTER in hopes of creating a second BLACKPINK.

Additionally, YG seems to be heavily pushing Ahyeon this time around. She’s the only member featured in the teaser, showcasing her vocal talent. Ahyeon, considered the group’s “ace,” previously caused a drop in YG’s stocks when she didn’t debut with “Batter Up”.

As a result, she’s getting pushed with her return to the lineup on April 1st. Ahyeon’s powerful vocals are said to carry YG’s signature sound, but whether she can truly lead the group remains to be seen.

However, even before its release, there are already predictions that “Sheesh” might be a tough nut to crack, with the risk of hindering BABYMONSTER’s success on the charts.

YG’s trademark style is strong and hip-hop, but without Teddy’s contribution, music seems to be a weak point for BABYMONSTER. On the flip side, expectations are high for the intro of their debut mini album, which has already started to gain traction just through the highlight medley.

In this year’s battle of the rookies, HYBE’s new girl group ILLIT is currently ahead with their captivating debut. HYBE has proven to be a master at managing girl groups, paving the way with trendsetting music. Hence, YG and BABYMONSTER are in need of a breakthrough to reclaim their position.
