Yoo Ah-in, prosecuted without detention + move into trial phase

Yoo Ah-in was prosecuted without detention

On Oct 19th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Violent Crime Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Kim Yeon-sil) prosecuted Yoo Ah-in on charges of habitual drug use and other offenses without detaining him. He was brought to trial.

According to the prosecution, Yoo Ah In allegedly engaged in illegal drug use, primarily through “hospital shopping” for medical anesthesia drugs for cosmetic procedures, obtaining and using various medical narcotics worth approximately 500 million won over about 200 occasions since 2020. He is also accused of obtaining sleeping pills illegally in other people’s names on multiple occasions and taking part in drug use, including cocaine and marijuana, with “Choi” and others in the United States last January.

Yoo Ah-in had faced the possibility of detention, but in May, the request for detention was denied, citing difficulty in determining evidence destruction or the risk of escape. Subsequently, in September, the prosecution applied for a second arrest warrant for Yoo Ah-in, accusing him of instructing acquaintances to destroy evidence and forcing his travel companions to smoke marijuana during his trip to the United States.

However, the second arrest warrant was also denied. The court noted, “Mr. Yoo acknowledges most of the criminal acts related to propofol use, illegal purchase of sleeping pills and his own marijuana smoking.” The court considered that substantial evidence had been secured in this regard.

As Yoo Ah-in now moves into the trial phase, all eyes are on what verdict the court will reach.
