An incumbent police officer suspected of leaking investigative information about the late actor Lee Sun-kyun was arrested
On March 21st, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency arrested A, an executive-level police officer affiliated with the Incheon Police Agency. A is suspected of leaking a report on the progress of the investigation into Lee Sun-kyun’s drug case to the outside.
Since January 15th, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency has been investigating the circumstances of the leaked investigative information. A reportedly captured the progress report of the investigation on his phone app and transmitted it to a specific media outlet’s journalists. The media outlet that received the report even exposed it in an article.
A is reported to be working in a department unrelated to drug crime investigations. As soon as the investigation report was exposed to the media, the Incheon Police Agency’s drug crime investigation unit conducted their own investigation and determined that it was another police officer in the system, not an insider. However, due to concerns about ensuring fairness, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency took over the investigation.
A police official stated, “It’s difficult to confirm specific investigation details as the investigation is ongoing.”
Meanwhile, Lee Sun-kyun’s drug use allegations were first reported in October last year. Lee Sun-kyun was booked on charges related to marijuana and psychotropic drugs under the Narcotics Control Act. He underwent three police summonses over a period of two months. Just four days after his third summons in December last year, he was found dead in a park in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Subsequently, in January this year, director Bong Joon-ho and other cultural artists held a press conference and issued a statement urging a thorough investigation into whether there were any security issues in the police investigation from the initial leakage of information about the deceased’s investigation to his extreme choice two months later.
