Will BABYMONSTER Revive YG Entertainment, Which Is In Deep Crisis?

YG Entertainment is facing various difficulties, and BABYMONSTER’s debut is expected to chase those away

Yang Hyun-suk, the overall producer of YG Entertainment, was sentenced to six months in prison and one year of probation for offenses under the Specific Crimes Aggravated Punishment Act during the appeal trial held on the 8th. The prosecution, which appealed against the initial verdict that declared Yang Hyun-suk innocent, added the charge of attempted coercion as a preparatory indictment, resulting in a guilty verdict.

As a result, there are speculations that the debut of BABYMONSTER, the group directly directed by Yang Hyun-suk, might be delayed once again. Originally scheduled to enter the music scene in September, their debut, which was already postponed once due to internal reasons, has been moved to November 24

As a result, BABYMONSTER is making their debut in the music industry amid an unstable internal atmosphere at YG Entertainment, not only due to the leadership issue with Yang Hyun-suk, but also with the vague contract status of BLACKPINK (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, Lisa).

Despite the unfavorable situation in various aspects, however, fans have significant expectations for BABYMONSTER.

BABYMONSTER is the first girl group to debut under YG Entertainment after 7 years since BLACKPINK. So far, the group members have proven their high-level vocal, dance, rap, and visual skills through the eight-part reality show “Last Evaluation”, securing a strong fandom since before debut.

The girl group’s official YouTube channel already has 3.17 million subscribers, ranking 11th among K-pop girl groups (as of 11 a.m. on November 13). In addition, their pre-debut song “DREAM”, which was released in May, achieved success with 53.91 million views and reached 1st place in the U.S. Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart.

YG Entertainment has stated that they have secured numerous tracks for BABYMONSTER’s album through several song camps with renowned overseas composers and in-house producers to meet the expectations of K-pop fans. They also emphasized their careful selection of the title track and revealed that the music video was shot over five days, aiming to capture each member’s individuality and the team’s identity.

Amid the crisis of YG Entertainment, which has suffered from damage to its corporate image and a drop in stock prices, attention is focused on whether BABYMONSTER will be able to “revive” the company.
