Was BLACKPINK Jennie Deceived into Starring in ‘The Idol’?

Amid criticisms about the plot of “The Idol”, netizens start wondering why Jennie decided to join the project.

Recently, “The Idol” aired the second episode called “Double Fantasy”. As with the first, the episode drew negative responses from the audience due to an excess of nude scenes, sexualized choreography, and explicit dialogues. The depicted wild partying on-screen may also come across as disturbing for some audience members.

As more criticisms pour in, viewers start thinking why BLACKPINK Jennie was so eager to jump into this project in the first place. Although the chance to debut in a U.S. series by a network giant such as HBO is tempting, is it really worth it for Jennie?

The audience thinks the BLACKPINK member jumped head first into the project without thinking ahead of the potential repercussion such a work can have on her reputation. Some believe her career is on a downturn after appearing in an R-rated series, while others find her not having much to do.

Despite the negative reactions, Jennie maintains a positive mindset because, in her words, this is her chance to be brave. With that, the idol proved she is satisfied with her choice. If not, she would not have spent an entire trip to France for the premiere of the series.

However, when the series reached its second episode, it began to show why Jennie has so much faith in director Sam Levinson and the series. “Double Fantasy” revealed a hidden face of Dyanne (Jennie), who waits in the dark for Jocelyn’s downfall and attempts to take her place when that happens. At the same time, she hides a complex relationship with Tedros (The Weeknd), who is trying to approach and manipulate Jocelyn.

While Dyanne appears to have more depth to her character, the overall script of “The Idol” is still a big question. In an awkward and exaggerated depiction of a singer on the verge of a mental breakdown, most viewers found Sam Levinson’s approach to be cheap. They believed he overused explicit scenes and neglected to tell the real struggle of a singer who has to deal with her mental problems.

At the same time, “The Idol” went through a directorial change when Amy Seimetz had to leave the series and leave it to the hands of Sam Levinson. When that happened, the script had to go through so many revisions that the story was “taken away” from the series.

Therefore, Jennie has not had much luck with her first acting role. Dyanne shows potential to be a layered character with an interesting past; yet, set in a messy script filled with explicit scenes, she can hardly stand out.
