Unexpected and ‘Indefinite’ Halting of Detective Conan’s Serialization on the Brink of Completion

The author, Gosho Aoyama, has been serializing this long-running cartoon in ‘Weekly Shonen Sunday’ since 1994, spanning an impressive 30 years until now.

However, news has surfaced that the serialization of Conan is scheduled to be discontinued.

On the 19th, a reliable source in ‘Weekly Shonen Sunday’ announced through social media that the main serialization of Detective Conan would be indefinitely suspended.

According to the insider, it appears that we won’t be able to follow Detective Conan’s story for the time being after the publication of the 9th issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday.

Instead, starting from the 20th issue to be released on April 10th, the story of ‘Kaito Kid’ is expected to be featured.

Kaito Kid is an irregularly serialized work by Gosho Aoyama, depicting the delightful story of Kaito Kuroba, a boy aspiring to be a magician, who becomes Kaito Kid to investigate his father’s death.

If the insider’s information is accurate, Kaito Kid’s return to Shonen Sunday is after a solid 7 years.

There are speculations in certain circles that this hiatus might be a temporary break to focus on the release of the 27th Detective Conan movie, ‘The Orléans’ Symbol of One Million Dollars,’ which is set to premiere in Japan in April.

In this movie, Kaito Kid and Hattori Heiji are expected to take center stage.

Previously, in 2019, Gosho Aoyama responded to a question about Detective Conan’s ending, stating that “ending it with 100 volumes would be good” and revealing, “the ending is already decided,” which was a shocking response.

Even after the release of the 100th volume in 2021, serialization continued, raising fans’ expectations for the conclusion.

However, with the sudden news of serialization discontinuation, many are expressing their disappointment.
