Through The Darkness” is a fact-based drama that focuses on how profiling played a role in criminal investigations. This series contains the concerns of the very first criminal behavioral analysts, the ones who first started this field in Korea. The attitude of Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil), Young-soo (Jin Sun-kyu), and Woo-joo (Ryeo-woon) of the Criminal Behavior Analysis team, who have to read “the mind of the evil,” is different from that of the Mobile Investigation Unit where their priority is to run fast to the scene.

Their goal is more than just catching and resolving the criminal of an already occurring case. Even if the criminal is caught, they must be worried about similar crimes that will occur later and predict the probability of a serial killer. Other police officers don’t look at this speculation nicely. In addition, it is even considered inefficient and useless for the police to visit the criminal directly in prison to listen to criminals’ stories, conduct interviews, and do favors for the criminals even.

The reason why we observe criminals and spend time on their stories is because we think we can prevent more serious crimes even in the harsh reality of having to be criticized for “using the killer’s story as advice to solve crimes.” This is based on numerous criminal databases, not vague beliefs without any fact to back it up.

Then, what does the Criminal Behavior Analysis team define violent criminals as? They don’t illuminate criminals as simple monsters. It has been revealed over and over again that it is difficult to identify the criminal in other crimes or additional crimes unless they are viewed as humans with egos. This reminds viewers of the society’s reaction when a violent crime occurs in reality.

reader of evil mind

This drama refers not only to the psychological war and pursuit between the police and criminals, but also to how evil starts and proceeds in a person’s mind and how to look at crime through a large amount of dialogue. In a police organization where quick case solving is prioritized, the procedure desired by the Criminal Behavior Analysis team makes things more complicated. Nevertheless, the characters are willing to take the hassle and draw the substance and background of the crime. What they want is not just to read the devil’s heart, but to read evil itself.

SBS’ “Through The Darkness” is air on every Friday and Saturday at 10 PM.
