The reason why a star in the 90s who visited Busan Film Festival was surprised to see Korean fans

Chinese actor Leung Chiu-wai, who was the main character who caused Korea’s “Hong Kong Film Syndrome” in the 1990s, visited the Busan International Film Festival for the first time in 18 years.

Leung Chiu-wai was also known as an admirer of Korea who frequently visited Korea for movie promotions, but it is the first time in 18 years that he visited the Busan International Film Festival since the open talk of “2046”, the opening film of the 2004 film festival.

Leung Chiu-wai visited the 27th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which opened on Oct 5th, and communicated with movie fans by digesting various schedules, such as attending the opening ceremony and winning the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award.

At the opening ceremony, he received the most spotlight by drawing enthusiastic cheers from fans from the moment he appeared. At the press conference held on the second day, he also proved his popularity by facing a fusillade of questions from reporters from all over the world.

At the press conference held on the morning of Oct 6th, Leung Chiu-wai talked about his diversified fan base, “I didn’t feel it, but I could feel it when I came to Busan. I didn’t know I had a young fan base. A fan sent me a letter saying, ‘I started liking you after watching your recent works, so I started to watch your previous works.'”

Referring to the “Leung Chiu-wai’s Special Exhibition” at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, he was surprised, “I couldn’t even consider the young fan base during this special exhibition, but I saw a lot of them.”

Leung Chiu-wai entered Hollywood for the first time as Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi and Xialing’s father and the leader of the Ten Rings, in the Marvel film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” released last year. He stole young fans’ hearts and made them search for his works.

Leung Chiu-wai confessed, “It was nice to be able to change my image. 10 years ago, I didn’t think I could play the role of a father.”

Regarding the role that was close to a villain, he said, “Unfortunately, I didn’t get a lot of villain scripts during my career. I’m interested in playing a complicated role, a role that makes you think a lot. I personally want to try the role of a serial killer.”

When asked “If you divide the first and second half of your life”, Leung Chiu-wai expressed his will for various acting activities, “I think the first 20 years are the learning stage and the latter 20 years are the displaying stage. Right now, it seems to be a stage where I can enjoy it without much stress. I think it would be okay to play a slightly older role.”
