The reason Kim Soo-hyun did not attend his father’s wedding

There have been many reports that actor Kim Soo-hyun was "absent" from his father's remarriage ceremony

Since he couldn’t be found at the wedding venue, it’s unclear whether the expression “absent” is accurate.

In May 2015, during an appearance on MBC’s variety show “World Changing Quiz”, singer Kim Heung-gook asked his junior colleague Jo Se-ho, “Why didn’t you come to Ahn Jae-wook’s wedding?” Jo Se-ho replied, “How could I go when I didn’t know?” This scene, where Jo Se-ho felt unjustly accused, resurfaced a year later and gained renewed popularity.

The following April, it was re-examined by netizens and became famous through SNS. Despite the program having already ended, MBC uploaded a clip (short video) of the scene in May.

Jo Se-ho gained the nickname “Professional Absentee” and the public enjoyed it as a form of entertainment, saying things like, “He didn’t come to my sister’s wedding either“, “I heard he didn’t attend his own parents’ wedding“… Initially not well-known, Jo Se-ho seized the opportunity to showcase his talents and steadily rose to fame, now being loved by the public like Yoo Jae-suk’s “right-hand man”.

It’s amusing, but seeing actor Kim Soo-hyun being portrayed as “absent” from his father’s remarriage ceremony reminded me of “Professional Absentee” Jo Se-ho. Of course, there’s no one scolding him like Kim Heung-gook did.

On April 13th, singer Kim Chung-hoon, who was the leader of the 1980s rock band Seven Dolphins, held a remarriage ceremony in Seoul. The event, which was a “wish-fulfillment” wedding expressing gratitude to the woman who had faithfully supported him through many years of obscurity, received unfavorable attention because it coincided with the airing of the drama “Queen of Tears” starring his son Kim Soo-hyun.

An acquaintance of Kim Chung-hoon clarified some “misunderstandings” regarding the wedding on April 16th.

Firstly, they explained, “The person who remarried this time has been carefully supporting singer Kim Chung-hoon for a long time. When he considered giving up the rock band and singing, she supported him in every way possible, allowing him to continue singing and pursuing the path of a singer. They are already a couple, and this time it was just a ‘belated wedding’, nothing more.”

They added, “Kim Chung-hoon wanted to fulfill the wish of his wife, who wanted to wear a wedding veil once. Although it was a wedding arranged with good intentions, they wanted to quietly hold it. Since ‘Queen of Tears’ is airing, they didn’t want it to be more widely known through the media.”

I’m not sure if “absent” is an appropriate term for not attending a wedding where there’s no obligation or expectation to attend. It seems like “absent” implies that attendance was necessary, and there’s a possibility of imposing an obligation on Kim Soo-hyun to attend.
