Kim Se-ui, the head of the controversial YouTube channel and media outlet Garo Sero Institute, has filed a request for a detention review after being arrested on allegations of defaming actor Kim Soo-hyun.
According to reports, the Seoul Central District Court scheduled a detention review hearing for Kim Se-ui at 2:10 p.m. on June 2. The request was reportedly submitted on May 31, just five days after a court-issued arrest warrant led to his detention.
A detention review is a legal procedure in South Korea that allows a court to reassess whether a suspect’s detention is lawful and whether continued custody remains necessary. Following the review, the court may decide to either maintain the detention or order the suspect’s release.
Kim Se-ui is accused of spreading false information through Garo Sero Institute broadcasts regarding the death of late actress Kim Sae-ron.
Investigators allege that Kim Se-ui falsely claimed that Kim Sae-ron’s death was caused by pressure from Kim Soo-hyun’s side to repay debts. He is also accused of publicly alleging that Kim Soo-hyun had dated Kim Sae-ron while she was a minor.
In addition, authorities claim that manipulated audio allegedly created using artificial intelligence technology was broadcast as if it were the late actress’s voice, causing serious damage to Kim Soo-hyun’s reputation.
Police reportedly concluded that Kim Se-ui knowingly produced and distributed the content despite recognizing that the claims were false, allegedly in an effort to attract public attention.
Based on those findings, investigators sought an arrest warrant. On May 26, the court approved the request, citing concerns over the potential destruction of evidence and the possibility of flight.
The case is currently being investigated under South Korea’s Information and Communications Network Act, including allegations related to defamation.
Following news of Kim Se-ui’s arrest, Kim Soo-hyun’s side has reportedly intensified its legal response. The actor’s representatives are said to be preparing a massive civil lawsuit seeking hundreds of billions of won in damages against those responsible for spreading the allegations.
At the same time, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency issued a statement thanking supporters who have continued to trust and wait for the actor throughout the controversy.
“We sincerely thank everyone who has believed in and waited for Kim Soo-hyun.”
The message has been widely interpreted by fans and industry observers as a possible indication that the actor may be preparing to resume public activities in the near future.
Although Kim Soo-hyun has remained largely inactive since February of last year, support from fans has shown no signs of slowing down.
His personal social media account continues to receive a steady stream of encouraging messages, with many fans expressing hope for his eventual return to the entertainment industry.
