“The problem with Lee Young Ji is that she doesn’t release any album”, said a music critic

Music critic Kang Il Kwon shared his beliefs about rapper Lee Young Ji.

On November 12th, music critic Kang Il Kwon published a long post on his Facebook, saying, “I saw some opinions from various online communities about Lee Young Ji‘s performance on ‘Show Me The Money’, so I wrote down some absurd opinions I want to point out.”

Kang Il Kwon said, “Isn’t it necessary to prove your abilities with an album first? I’m not asking her to release a good album, but I want her to build a career with an album, which is something she hasn’t had yet. I’ve been criticizing artists who haven’t released a single album for years and deeply skeptical about those who promised to do so.”

He then added, “Artists have been releasing albums steadily all over the world, and the media also has various debates when it comes to album releases. Even in countries that lead the trend of pop music, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, album sales have fallen sharply. Nevertheless, artists constantly release albums. Artists are the ones who stand at the forefront when it comes to explaining the importance of albums.”

The critic continued, “Reasons for not releasing an album, such as ‘It won’t sell’, or ‘No one will listen to it’, are just pathetic and don’t make sense at all”, adding “In addition, Lee Young Ji has already gained huge recognition from the public. Even if she didn’t appear on ‘Show Me The Money’, the media and the public will still pay attention to her if she releases an album. The album’s completeness is a separate matter to discuss.”

In particular, he emphasized, “I’m not saying that she has to make a masterpiece, but since she’s an artist, she should continue her career with an album or at least an EP. The problem is that she doesn’t have a single production. It’s a natural thing for a listener to demand an album from an artist whose job is producing music”.

Lastly, he said, “Since there are people who will wonder things like ‘Who listens to albums nowadays?’, or ‘Releasing albums is for the oldies’, the artists who produce and release albums in Korea are getting exhausted”, adding “I wonder how confident they are to say such things. Malformed listeners born in the malformed Korean hip-hop scene”.

Lee Young Ji is arousing keen interest from music fans with her appearance on Mnet’s “Show Me The Money 11” as a contestant. In the 3rd episode, which aired on November 11th, she passed the second mission – “60 Seconds Team Rapper Casting” and joined Jay Park’s team.

Mnet’s “Show Me The Money 11” airs at 11 p.m every Friday.
