Taeyang indirectly mentions former Big Bang member Seungri, “A series of bad things happened. It was tough”

Singer Taeyang looked back on the past when he had a hard time.

During the media listening session for his new EP “Down to Earth” held at Hyundai Card Understage in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on April 24th, Taeyang explained that the theme of his album was ‘Sunset’. He confessed, “I love watching the sunset. During the toughest times, the sunset gave me great comfort and lots of inspiration, and it led me to come up with the concept and structure of this album. It was not an exaggeration to say that this album started with the sunset as it had given me many emotions and thoughts.”

He said, “Isn’t the sunset also a phenomenon created by the sun (‘taeyang’ in Korean?)”, referring to his stage name Taeyang. He added, “I think the sun is a planet that shines on its own and the most sincere being. It always stays in the same place, whether when it’s cloudy or rainy, right? I want to become an artist like that, that’s why I named myself Taeyang.”

“Even when the night falls, the sunset welcomes it with a beautiful appearance without any complaints. In such repetitive nights, I saw my own reflection in the sunset. I also thought about how to overcome difficult and challenging situations. Those thoughts brought me back to my original mindset and intentions”, Taeyang shared.

What made Taeyang suffer such a hard time? The male singer indirectly mentioned Seungri, the former member who left Big Bang due to the Burning Sun Scandal. Taeyang recalled and said, “There seemed to be a series of situations that were not easy to overcome. At the time, I was in the military and it was very hard for me to communicate with the outside world. I felt exhausted because bad things kept happening.”

He continued, “Even after I got discharged from the military, it was not easy to face the COVID-19 pandemic. I couldn’t perform as planned and the process of making music was not easy either. It was tough since such a situation continued for a long time”, adding “I’ve been doing music ever since I was young, and when I suddenly had to stop, it was difficult to endure. I couldn’t move forward with a clear vision.”

“Down to Earth” is Taeyang’s new solo album after six years. It has a total of 6 songs, including the titular song “Seed”, and the b-side tracks, such as VIBE (Feat. Jimin of BTS) pre-released in January, “Shoong! (feat. LISA of BLACKPINK)”, “I Am”, “Inspiration (feat. Beenzino), and “Nightfall (feat. Bryan Chase)”. Taeyang participated in composing and writing lyrics for all of his songs, while BTS Jimin, BLACKPINK Lisa, Beenzino and Bryan Chase joined as featuring artists. This album will be released at 6 p.m. on April 25th.
