Ryu Jun-yeol’s Past Controversies Re-examined After Dating Scandal: From Playing Golf To Abuse Of Power

After the dating controversy ended with the apology of his ex-lover Hyeri, other issues in the past re-emerged

Ryu Jun-yeol has been doing environmental protection activities since he started donating to Greenpeace in 2016. Apart from donating his voice to the Greenpeace Arctic Protection Campaign, the actor has continued to show his love for the environment by becoming the first Asian celebrity to board the Greenpeace environmental ship Rainbow Warrior after completing a training program to monitor the environmental ship. It is known that Ryu Jun-yeol has voiced his strong determination to protect the environment ever since his debut.

However, a netizen exposed Ryu Jun-yeol’s behaviors in online communities, saying “He enjoys playing golf, which is one of the main contributors to environmental destruction. He also took loans to construct a building, which, according to the Ministry of Environment in 2019, leaves the waste of 4 times more than that of household waste. As this became controversial, the actor explained that it was for a clothing business”.

Through personal channels and interviews, Ryu Jun-yeol has proved himself as a golf enthusiast despite being an environmental ambassador. Also, he also utilized the technique called “debt tech” in which he purchased and sold buildings using loans for 90% of the acquisition price to earn approximately 4 billion won in profits.

Last year, Ryu Jun-yeol also suffered criticism due to the unexpected controversy over his power trip attitude. The controversy arose after he appeared on a broadcast hosted by Twitch streamer and Youtuber Chimchakman to promote the movie “The Night Owl”.

Park Jung-min shared, “Jun-yeol doesn’t use disposable items when having meals during lunchtime because he carries his own plate with him”, mentioning Ryu Jun-yeol’s “zero waste” practices. When asked if he does the dishes at home, Ryu Jun-yeol replied, “No, my manager does it now”. Upon hearing that, Park Jung-min commented, “So your manager is participating in the environmental practices”. Chimchakman calmly added, “But from the Earth’s perspective, it doesn’t matter who does the dishes”.

After watching the scene, many netizens criticized Ryu Jun-yeol, saying “Why is his manager doing the dishes even though he is the person who should practice ‘zero waste’?”. At that time, Ryu Jun-yeol’s manager said to Xports News, “The actor has been practicing ‘zero waste’ on the set for a very long time. Many people on the set saw it and joined him. The power trip rumors are not true at all, so I don’t think it is necessary for me to respond to you all one by one”.
