Beomgyu was born in Taejeon-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, South Korea, and has an older brother. He attended Hanlim Multi Art School as a Practical Dance major.
He trained in Big Hit for 2 years before debuting as TXT.

Prior to debuting as TXT, Beomgyu played the electric guitar in a rock band.
On January 20, 2019, Beomgyu was introduced as the 5th and final member of TXT after his teaser video was published on YouTube. The group debuted on March 4, 2019 with their first mini album “The Dream Chapter: STAR”.

Back in 2023, Korean netizens speculated that Beomgyu was in relationship with LE SSERAFIM’s Chaewon, after seeing a goods of Chaewon in TXT’s dorm. Additionally, they pointed out Chaewon’s reaction to Beomgyu’s action during a stage.
While some believed in this rumor, most people believed it to be groundless, and some explained that TXT’s managers also live with the members at the dorm.
Controversy
Beomgyu in general is often regarded as “unproblematic” by many fans, and the only controversy related to him is the “mistreatment” of Big Hit Music.
In particular, there have been cases where Beomgyu had no or extremely few solo lines in TXT songs, and the male idol’s solo opportunities were extremely limited. His requested to film a challenge with famous gamer Keria was also denied by the agency.
Additionally, Beomgyu once expressed that he had to plead the company to let him play the guitar for his self-composed song, and despite his aspirations to become an MC or Radio DJ, has never been given any opportunity.
