NewJeans Sets Global Stages Ablaze: From LoL Worlds Opening to BBMAs Performer in Record Time

NewJeans, which debuted just a year and three months ago, is rapidly entering the global stage

On November 19th (KST), NewJeans will perform the opening ceremony at the 2023 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship final, and on November 20th, they will take the stage as performer at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs).

Both the LoL World Championship (Worlds) and BBMAs are prestigious competitions and award ceremonies in the fields of e-sports and music, respectively. NewJeans, carrying the titles of ‘first’ and ‘shortest period’ for a K-pop group, is set to solidify their status as a global trend artist by consecutively gracing these two stages.

The LoL World Championship final, where NewJeans will be the first full K-pop group to perform at the opening ceremony, boasts a simultaneous viewership of up to 74 million people (as of 2021), surpassing even the Super Bowl in terms of viewership during sports events (as of 2019).

This sports event attracts huge attention, and NewJeans is expected to heat up the atmosphere of the final with the first performance of the theme song ‘GODS’.

In the past, top-tier artists who sang the theme songs have graced the opening stage of the LoL World Championship, including Imagine Dragons (2014) and Lil Nas X (2022). Joining this world-class lineup, NewJeans plans to intensify the final’s atmosphere by unveiling the performance of ‘GODS.’

The BBMAs, one of the three major music award ceremonies in the United States, is famous for its glamorous performer lineup featuring top-notch artists every year. NewJeans, as the first K-pop girl group and the fastest (1 year and 3 months) among all K-pop groups to be selected as a BBMAs performer, has proven their unstoppable rise. This year, NewJeans has received the most nominations (a total of 5) among K-pop artists at the BBMAs.

In a recent interview with the People, NewJeans expressed their astonishment, “We can’t believe it. The news of being nominated still feels unbelievable.” They conveyed their gratitude, “We are incredibly thankful for the love and recognition our music has received from international fans.”

Earlier in August, NewJeans, without significant global activities, captivated an audience of about 70,000 at the Lollapalooza Chicago music festival, where they became the first K-pop girl group to headline.

As they prepare to once again stir up the world with performances at the LoL World Championship final opening and the BBMAs, the global impact of NewJeans is eagerly anticipated.
