Lee Sun-kyun’s Drug Use Controversy Affects ‘My Mister’ Viewership

“I started re-watching ‘My Mister’ but couldn’t immerse myself because of Lee Sun-kyun, so I turned it off,” said a Netflix user

Lee Sun-kyun’s drug use allegations have left viewers who love tvN’s drama ‘My Mister,’ starring Lee Sun-kyun and IU as leads, feeling disappointed. Some fans even revealed that they probably won’t re-watch the show.

‘My Mister,’ directed by Kim Won-seok and written by Park Hae-young, aired on tvN in 2018. In Korea, it’s available for re-watching on various online streaming services, including TVING, Netflix, Disney+, and more.

Although it is a drama that premiered five years ago, the recent controversy surrounding Lee Sun-kyun’s alleged drug use has led viewers to start binge-watching, temporarily bringing it back into the ‘Trending Now’ category in Netflix Korea.

However, viewers’ reactions to the drama are now cold. Outrage regarding the controversy surrounding Lee Sun-kyun is preventing them from immersing themselves in the story.

One viewer lamented, “It’s not ‘My Mister’ anymore; it’s someone else’s mister.” Another viewer said, “I don’t want to watch any drama or film with Lee Sun-kyun, not just ‘My Mister’.” Negative public opinion seems to be substantiated as ‘My Mister’ is currently nowhere to be found on streaming platforms like TVING or Netflix Korea’s Top 10.

In China, on the ‘My Mister’ page on the famous content review site Douban, posts and comments related to Lee Sun-kyun’s drug use allegations have been popping up, with comments like, “Korean media reported that the top actor L (Lee Sun-kyun) is facing drug allegations,” “Did Lee Sun-kyun really do drugs?” and “I might not watch it because of Lee Sun-kyun.”

Nevertheless, ‘My Mister’ on Douban has received a high rating of 9.4, attracting 154,378 comments. Although ‘My Mister’ is not available to legally stream in China, it is even more popular than another drama written by Park Hae-young aired locally in China, ‘My Liberation Notes,’ (around 120,000 comments on Douban).
