Lee Jong Suk, “I’m in my mid-30s, and I tend to think about competitiveness and direction in a realistic way”

Lee Jong Suk, who won the Grand Prize at last year’s MBC Drama Awards with “Big Mouth” after his military discharge then publicized his romantic relationship with singer IU, decorated the cover and joined an interview for Esquire’s March issue.

During the interview, Lee Jong Suk said, “I didn’t know the identity of my character because I was not informed of all the script until it ended. I didn’t know the hidden identity of other characters”, adding “I didn’t know what developments would follow so I had no choice but to purposely portray Chang Ho with the expressions that could be used whether I would turn out to be Big Mouse or not”.

He continued, “To some extent, I was sure that Chang Ho would not be Big Mouse”, adding “However, I had no choice but to balance my acting because I really didn’t know the following story. At some point, it helped the viewers become more interested in finding Big Mouse”.

Thanks to Lee Jong Suk’s excellent performance, “Big Mouth” successfully captivated drama fans. Viewers’ curiosity about whether Park Chang Ho was Big Mouse was one of the main factors that led the drama to achieve a viewer rating peak of 13.7%.

After “V.I.P”, Lee Jong Suk took on various intense and heavy roles in “Big Mouth”, “Decibel” and “The Witch: Part 2”. In this regard, the actor said, “I didn’t intend to play such intense characters. However, since I’m in my mid-30s and it was right ahead of my comeback after a long time, I thought I should play characters that I had never done before and widen my acting spectrum”.

He added, “In some cases, the worries that I had when selecting a character did not depend on my preference or emotions. I understand my position as an actor, and I tend to think about competitiveness and the direction I should continue in a realistic way.”
