[Leakage of information related to Lee Sun-kyun’s case] Conduct search and seizure of Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency and media outlets

According to investigative authorities on Jan 23rd, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit conducted a search and seizure of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Drug Crime Investigation Unit, which investigated Lee Sun-kyun’s case, from 10 AM to 5 PM on Jan 22nd.

The police also carried out search and seizure operations against media outlets that extensively covered the detailed information regarding Lee Sun-kyun’s investigation. The police are analyzing the mobile phones, electronic devices of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency Drug Crime Investigation Unit employees. Additionally, the police are looking into whether investigative information was leaked to specific media outlets.

Earlier on Jan 15th, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency requested the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency to investigate the circumstances surrounding the leakage of investigative information. At that time, the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, which conducted the investigation into Lee Sun-kyun, considered it difficult to ensure fairness if they conducted an internal investigation into the leakage of information.

Lee Sun-kyun was booked on Oct 23rd last year after the first report on the drug-related internal investigation surfaced on Oct 19th last year. Subsequently, he underwent three rounds of police investigations over about 2 months, consistently denying the allegations. On Dec 27th last year, he was found dead in a park in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in an apparent suicide.
