Kim Tae Ri’s thriller drama “Revenant” starts off well by achieving 12.8% rating in episode 1

Kim Tae Ri gets possessed by the devil from the first broadcast of SBS’s “Revenant”.

SBS’s Fri-Sat drama “Revenant” (written by Kim Eun Hee/ directed by Lee Jung Rim) announced the powerful comeback of “Kim Eun Hee’s genre script” with the broadcast of episode 1 on June 23rd. The last scene showing Kim Tae Hee getting shocked and terrified by the devil thrilled viewers.

According to Nielsen Korea, episode 1 of “Revenant” recorded a nationwide rating of 9.9% and 10.8% in Seoul area with a real-time peak of 12.8%. Achieving double-digit ratings and ranking 1st among all programs of the same broadcasting time on Friday from the first broadcast, “Revenant” heralded a big success. In the 2049 rating chart, the drama recorded 4.1% and surpassed all competitors in the same broadcasting time slot.

From the opening scene of Goo Kang Mo (Jin Sun Kyu) losing his life under the control of the devil looking just like him to the ending scene of Goo San Young (Kim Tae Ri) finally seeing the devil, the development with endless mysterious events was so intense that viewers couldn’t take their eyes off the screen. Folklore materials, such as red daenggi, jade binyeos, black rubber bands, blue pottery pieces, herb bottles, and gold strings, were shown as clues to trigger viewers’ curiosity. Unfolding a story based on folklore and “what our ancestors had believed since a long time ago”, “Revenant” presented the most Korean occult drama.

The acting performances of trustworthy actors Kim Tae Ri and Oh Jung Se were overwhelming. Kim Tae Ri portrayed the reality of the young generation who lives more diligently and faithfully than anyone else through the character San Young, who takes on various part-time jobs to support her family instead of her mother Gyeong Mun (Park Ji Young) while preparing for the civil service exam. In a few scenes where she transforms into the devil, Kim Tae Ri gave off a chilling aura with only her movements.

Oh Jung Se appeared as folklore professor Yeom Hae Sang, who strongly defends the value of folklore studies that even his students complain and call him “a crazy professor who sees ghosts”, and brought about a serious yet delicate acting. The traces of the time he had struggled tirelessly to prevent unfair and painful deaths were shown clearly on his face even without showing many emotional expressions.

San Young got frustrated after discovering that her mother had been hiding the existence of her father and making her think badly about her father, however, she didn’t want to ask her mother, who has a weak heart, anymore. Returning to her daily life, San Young went to a construction site to deliver food and met Yeom Hae Sang (Oh Jung Se). Upon seeing San Young, Hae Sang asked, “Are you Professor Goo Kang Mo’s daughter?”, adding “I texted you several times but why didn’t you contact me? A devil is following you. It’s getting bigger. Is there anyone around you who suddenly hates you, disappears or dies?”.

Incidents of people dying occurred consecutively around San Young. Recalling Hae Sang’s warning, San Young began to investigate the strange phenomenon that is happening to her. After the death of a friend, San Young, who previously denied the existence of ghosts, froze as she saw the spirit of her friend bleeding in the mirror. Just as Hae Sang said, “Be careful with doors. The inside and outside of the door are different worlds”, the ghost stood in front of the open front door.

The devil manipulated Goo Kang Mo to possess San Young through the red daenggi Kang Mo left for his daughter. The devil escaped from San Young’s body to manipulate Kang Mo to hang himself. As if he had expected his death, Kang Mo wrote a letter to Hae Sang, saying “If I die, please help my daughter, San Young”. The devil in San Young actually killed Hae Sang’s mother decades ago.

Attention is focused on the next development and who will be the next target of the devil. The second episode of “Revenant” will air on SBS at 10 p.m. on June 24th.
