K-Pop Music Show Uses AI to Create Fan-cams? Japan deeply impressed

Individual fan-cams of K-Pop idols are created by AI instead of being shot with multiple cameras

After music broadcasts end, what fans always look for is individual member fan-cams. A fan-cam is an abbreviation for ‘camera-recorded video,’ a trend among K-pop idol fans.

While music broadcasts primarily focus on groups and may not capture individual members well, fan-cams, by specifically highlighting certain members, allow fans to see their favorite member’s performance in more detail.

With the advancement of fan-cam technology and culture, instead of fans shooting the fan-cams as was common in the past, broadcasting companies themselves now provide fan-cams.

Recently, many Japanese media outlets were astonished by the latest technology used in creating fan-cams on Korean music programs.

In particular, a November 18 broadcast of Japanese station NHK paid attention to the fact that AI is used to create fan-cams on Korean music broadcasts.

In particular, for “Music Bank”, an AI technology recognizes the faces of each member from the computer and extracts specific members from the entire video. Then, when switching members, the extraction target changes immediately, allowing the creation of multiple fan-cams from a single full video.

Upon witnessing this, people in the broadcast repeatedly admired the AI camera technology in Korea.

A footage video also reveals that the AI camera accurately captured members even when they performed intense choreography during the performance. It is known that “Music Bank” produces more than 10,000 fan-cam videos annually using this method.

In response, K-pop fans in Japan expressed reactions such as, “As expected, K-pop”, “So technology has advanced like this….”, “Korea is amazing…”, “It’s astonishing K-pop technology”, “It would be nice if Japan introduced this too”, and “I was curious about how fan-cams are shot, and it’s fascinating.”

Meanwhile, Korean fans themselves were also shocked, leaving comments such as “I didn’t know it was shot with AI”, “No wonder it was stable without shaking”, “We need to appreciate Korean technology”, “I thought it was filmed by the camera director”, “It recognizes the faces of the members and finds them”, and “The fan-cam culture has developed like this.”

Meanwhile, KBS developed a VVERTIGO prototype equipped with an AI engine in 2018.

Utilizing this, they produce various fan-cams for music shows such as “Music Bank” and “Immortal Songs”.
