K-netizen Claims NewJeans Has Nothing Korean About Them: Can They Be Considered K-Pop?

A netizen on Pann recently sparked a debate about NewJeans lacking Korean elements in their music and concept.

A post on the online community Pann published on July 21 titled “NewJeans doesn’t have anything Korean about them” gained attention.

The original poster wrote, “Isn’t NewJeans just pop, not K-pop? Honestly, I can’t see any aspect that represents our country’s uniqueness in them. They seem like a pop girl group just trying to quickly follow overseas pop trends.”

However, under this post, other netizens argue that criticizing NewJeans for lacking in Korean identity is unfair. They left comments defending NewJeans:

  • But other K-pop groups also have non-English lyrics, why are you only criticizing NewJeans? Keyboard patriots like you just bring down domestic artists no matter what they do. In reality, while you do nothing, NewJeans is living a life that benefits Korea hundreds of times more, even making it onto the Billboard charts.
  • Other groups also have English lyrics, but only NewJeans gets criticized like this. It just shows that people recognize NewJeans as the top group.
  • NewJeans isn’t even pop either. It seems like they are heading in a different direction.
  • BTS is also pop, and Baek Yerin is pop too, right? But both fall under K-pop, don’t they?
