Hits Of The 2000s Suddenly Go Viral Again: Lee Hyo-ri’s “10 Minutes” & Kim Jong-kook’s “Loveable”

Released in 2003 and 2005, respectively, Lee Hyo-ri’s “10 Minutes” and Kim Jong-kook’s “Loveable” recently became trendy again

“Loveable” Challenge, a dance challenge using Kim Jong-kook’s song “Loveable” started by a Japanese influencer in the second half of last year, became a huge hit among teenagers and many famous idols also joined the trend. Beyond Korea, “Loveable” Challenge also spread to China and Thailand.

Kim Jong-kook was named among the “three great samas” in Japan. Although Kim Jong-kook used to be a very famous singer, he is better known as an entertainer in variety shows nowadays. As such, many GenZ netizens reacted, “You were a singer, not an entertainer?”, “I thought you only liked working out. Your song is so good”, etc.

Taking advantage of the momentum, Kim Jong-kook released a new song called “Spring Has Come” on April 19th. This is his new song in two years and two months since his previous music release, “My Love”, in January 2022.

However, regarding the dance challenge, he carefully shared, “I don’t think they will do it if they know it’s my song. Both the song and my voice are kinda lovely. If I appear and suddenly dance, it will shock people and they’ll be like ‘Is that really him?’”.

Lee Hyo-ri’s “10 Minutes” is gaining huge love as it became the BGM for the hottest makeup challenge recently on TikTok. Via the hashtags “2000s Leehyori Makeup” and “2000s Asian Makeup”, GenZ TikTok users show how they tried Lee Hyo-ri’s makeup looks back in the old days.

Using the unique beat of “10 Minutes”, TikTokers create an impressive transformation showing before and after trying Lee Hyo-ri’s makeup, giving off a Y2K sensibility. The number of videos joining this trend has exceeded 70,000 and “10 Minutes” has also risen to the top of the TikTok Chart.

Combined with Y (year), 2, and K (kilo), Y2K means end-of-century sentiment and it refers to the style, fashion, and makeup trend in the 2000s. After decades, it goes viral again as teenagers nowadays adapt it in a modern way.

Attention is on whether Lee Hyo-ri, who has become a trendsetter once again, will take this opportunity and push ahead with her music activities.
