From Cai Xukun to Fan Bingbing: the status of top Chinese stars after scandals

Many famous Chinese artists have faced backlash from audiences and have been banned from participating in domestic artistic activities due to their scandals. Below are the various status of top Chinese stars after controversies.

Cai Xukun

Cai Xukun debuted as an actor in 2012. At the time, the male star appeared in several projects such as “Half a Fairytale”, “Police Woman Li Chunchun”, and “Lock Me Up, Tie Him Down”.

However, the male star’s popularity sky-rocketed in 2018, after appearing in the survival show “Idol Producer”. He eventually ranked 1st multiple times and debuted as the center of the final boy group, “Nine Percent”.

With this, Cai Xukun became a major name in the Chinese entertainment industry, gaining huge recognition in the music scene. His top-notch fanbase even earned Cai Xukun the title of “Top 4 Kings of Popularity” in C-biz.

However, Cai Xukun, who has always had a clean image, was recently revealed to have got a woman pregnant and asked her to abort the child. Even worse, his mother, who suspected the woman of “trapping” her son, hired a private investigator and even installed a spy cam in front of her door, causing a serious case of privacy violation. In addition, related rumors, such as Cai Xukun getting 3 other women pregnant in the past, also started to spread.

The scandal erupted while Cai Xukun was on a world tour, and any keywords related to the male idol became top trends on social media. Whether the rumors were true or not, they had a significant impact on his image.

Fans are waiting for a statement or clarification from Cai Xukun’s representatives, but currently, they remain silent.

Zheng Shuang

Once known to be the “hot topic princess”, actress Zheng Shuang was eventually “banned” from the Chinese entertainment industry. In particular, she saddened Chinese and international audiences alike after a series of personal life controversies.

As the former “Queen of Youth Films”, Zheng Shuang’s works, such as “Love O2O”, “Meteor Shower”, “Rush to the Dead Summer”, “Swords of Legends”, and so on, consistently hit remarkable viewership ratings and were beloved by audiences.

However, Zheng Shuang’s rapid success took a stumble due to stagnant acting skills and uncontrolled statements. Later on in 2021, the actress’ various controversies, which range from child abandonment to tax evasion, forced her to cease entertainment activities in 2021, and all her social media accounts in China were deleted.

Although the actress hasn’t been active in Cbiz for several years, Zheng Shuang continues to attract attention and stir controversy whenever she appears on social media. Currently, she lives in the United States with her pets, but her life seems to still be unsettled.

Occasionally, the actress would post some old photos from her time in the entertainment industry on social media to vent her emotions. She has also created a YouTube channel and plans to produce content, causing some to believe that her actions are a stubborn attempt to regain fame.

Kris Wu

Kris Wu, another one of Cbiz’s “Top 4 Kings of Popularity”, saw his career crumble due to a personal scandal. In particular, the idol-actor tarnished his reputation beyond repair as he faced accusations of serious crimes, which ranged from sexual assaulting minors and drug use, to procuring and deceiving young women.

After a lengthy investigation and trial, Kris Wu was officially sentenced to 13 years in prison and fined nearly 85 million USD for tax evasion. Under the supervision of the justice system, Kris Wu spends his free time composing and singing for fellow inmates. He has allegedly been assigned the role of managing a group of prisoners. After completing his 13-year sentence, the actor will be deported to Canada and may face chemical castration.

Kris

This is an extremely shocking conclusion, considering that Kris Wu once conquered both the acting and singing fields and received astronomical appearance fees.

Due to his criminal charges, the production of “The Golden Hairpin”, which had a massive investment and starred Yang Zi and Kris Wu, was canceled. The producers are still attempting to find alternative solutions for the film, such as replacing Kris Wu with actor Lin Gengxin and reshooting certain scenes.

Fan Bingbing

As a highly influential star in the Chinese showbiz industry, Fan Bingbing suffered significant damage to her reputation and career due to a five-year broadcast ban and a three-year boycott for tax evasion, resulting in a fine of 128 million USD.

At the time, the actress lost almost everything, going from an A-star actress with top reputation and immense power in the entertainment industry, to someone with an extremely poor public image.

Fan-Bingbing

During the scandal, Fan Bingbing spent time at home reflecting on herself. The top Cbiz actress also engaged in charity work to rebuild her image and expressed frustration about not being able to act. She restricted her media appearances and turned to making a living by selling beauty products online or engaging in international business partnerships. It’s easy to spot the actress casually hanging out with friends, dressed comfortably and simply, as her star power no longer holds the same allure.

At the beginning of 2023, however, Fan Bingbing returned to acting via the film “Green Night,” and even recently appeared on the red carpet of the Berlin International Film Festival. The media sees this as an opportunity for her to finally return, perhaps even regaining her fame to the same level as when she starred in “The Empress of China”.
