From aespa’s ‘Drama’ to Red Velvet’s ‘Chill Kill’: Unmistakable Charms of SM Girl Groups’ Recent Releases

aespa and Red Velvet made their comebacks consecutively, only three days apart

The comebacks of these two groups under the same company, SM Entertainment, has captured much attention. Both aespa and Red Velvet have returned with what they do best.

Firstly, aespa made their comeback on November 10th with their fourth mini-album ‘Drama’ and its title track of the same name. The song is a hip-hop dance track with a catchy drum sound and sophisticated synth bass, featuring aespa’s confident charisma as the story unfolds from them.

Lyrics like “No regrets, I faced it and broke through / Touched the world with my fingertips, moved it / The main character holding the key is me” showcase aespa’s boldness.

Since their debut song ‘Black Mamba,’ aespa boldly broke away from the typical concepts of other girl groups, showcasing a lively and refreshing image with songs like ‘Next Level’ and ‘Savage.’ They integrated the concept of Kwangya, defeating the villain Black Mamba.

However, in their previous release ‘Spicy,’ aespa concluded the battle with Black Mamba and returned to the real world, exuding a carefree vibe.

From ‘Spicy’ onward, there was anticipation whether aespa would continue the story of the Real World or stick to Kwangya. Ultimately, they chose what they are confident in with the lyrics of ‘Girls in the Back’ from ‘Drama,’ presenting aespa’s unique charm. Indeed, aespa is back.

Red Velvet released their third full album, ‘Chill Kill,’ on November 13th. This marked their first full album in six years since ‘Perfect Velvet’ in 2017.

The title track, ‘Chill Kill,’ unfolds dramatically and uniquely, portraying the dramatic narrative of a love story turned upside down.

‘Chill Kill’ is a song that portrays the duality of Red Velvet, emitting a coldness behind bright smiles, showcasing what Red Velvet does best. In previous songs like ‘Peek-A-Boo’ and ‘RBB,’ Red Velvet established their own genre by combining a crisp feel with hopeful melodies.

As the group name suggests, combining ‘Red’ and ‘Velvet,’ Red Velvet’s duality served as both an identity and a unique worldview.

In this comeback, Red Velvet mixed both the Red and Velvet concepts, creating a song that seeks a twist from the calm intro to the bright and hopeful chorus.

Before this comeback, there were speculations of their disbandment, as the group changed their official Instagram bio from ‘Red Velvet Official’ to ‘Happy Ending’ as part of their comeback promotion. However, SM has denied the disbandment rumor.

Red Velvet, with their new song ‘Chill Kill,’ has encapsulated both tragedy and hope, but it seems that only hope remains for the group’s future. For Red Velvet, this is just the beginning.
