Choi Soo-jong’s Casting In “Taejo Wang Geon” Re-examined Amid Kim Dong-joon’s Miscast Controversy
Is Kim Dong-joon’s appearance in “Taejo Wang Geon” really a miscast?
Appearing on “You Quiz on The Block” recently, actor Choi Soo-jong recalled the time when he was cast for “Taejo Wang Geon”, saying “Some people reacted like ‘How can a king has such a round face and double eyelids?’”.
Since it was a historical drama about the history of Goryeo with 200 episodes, viewers had high expectations for the casting of the lead actors. When Choi Soo-jong’s casting was announced, responses were divided.
In fact, Choi Soo-jong didn’t have much experience in historical dramas at that time. Two projects in 1988 and 1990 were all his historical dramas before starring in “Taejo Wang Geon”. Although the actor gained recognition for his excellent actings with leading roles in various other dramas, many people still doubted his ability to lead a historical of more than 200 episodes.
Some said Choi Soo-jong’s strengths in sad expressions, smile and friendliness did not go well with the role of a king. Meanwhile, ZE:A’s former member Kim Dong-joon is currently receiving criticism for his role in KBS’s 50th anniversary special drama “Goryeo–Khitan War.”
The drama’s ratings were well received, recording 5.5% in the first episode and 7.4% in the second episode (according to Nielsen Korea), but there is a lot of buzz about Kim Dong-joon’s performance. Some viewers pointed out, “Kim Dong-joon is a miscast that does not fit the drama.” On the other hand, some viewers responded that Kim Dong-joon’s acting was not lacking. Instead of continuing to be involved in the miscasting controversy on his own, hopefully the actor can reverse the situatôn like senior actor Choi Soo-jong.
