Chinese Designer Accuses Lisa of Plagiarizing Outfit in New MV

A Chinese Designer Publicly Accuses Lisa's Stylist of Stealing Her Idea

On June 28, international superstar Lisa (BLACKPINK) officially unleashed her second solo music project with “Rockstar.” Following a grand comeback, Lisa’s new music video quickly became a hot topic in global communities, spanning from music to fashion.

Recently, on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), a Chinese designer named Jewel Y unexpectedly posted a series of accusations against Lisa and her team, claiming they plagiarized one of her designs from 2020. Specifically, in the new MV, Lisa wears a leather star-shaped halter top representing the “Rockstar” concept in one outfit. This issue quickly gained traction on Chinese social media.

The designer also shared more details in another post, stating that from 2020 to 2023, her products were produced in London and had to be sent abroad for photoshoots. A Korean (or British) stylist allegedly borrowed the star top from Jewel, stole the idea, and it started appearing widely on social media.

Additionally, Jewel mentioned that her design had not been copyrighted because her brand was not popular in the Chinese domestic market. During the latter half of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jewel completely transitioned to the makeup industry, and her fashion brand had been put on hold since then. “Many plagiarism cases have not been addressed because I changed careers, but that does not change the nature of the theft,” Jewel added.

Some comments from netizens under the Chinese designer’s post:

– “Isn’t a star shape too common?”

– “Your design is a solid star, but Lisa’s is assembled to form a pentagon inside.”

– “I also find Lisa’s design more appealing. If it’s plagiarism, the stylist’s aesthetics are on another level.”

– “You ignored so many cases, but you’re making a fuss over Lisa. Aren’t you taking advantage of her popularity?”

– “The important thing is you said your design isn’t copyrighted. Anyone can claim they thought of it first!”

In reality, star-shaped crop tops are not rare. A quick search on Google will reveal similar designs in various colors and materials from different brands.

Except for the star top, which is considered a custom piece by the stylist, the full set of Lisa’s outfit has been revealed to come from very stylish brands such as Diesel, KNWLS, and Rombaut.
