BTS Jimin comes first on Billboard Hot Trending Songs Chart – the new Kpop reign over Billboard

BTS Jimin
BTS ranked first on the Billboard Social 50 chart for 210 weeks.

At one period in the past, all the top 10 rankings on the Billboard chart were filled up by Kpop artists. This happened on the Billboard Social 50, which, while not the main chart, served as the most important indicator at the time, alongside the real-time weekly chart that was constantly reorganized in line with changes. The Billboard Social 50 chart attracted attention as a chart that can confirm the artist’s popularity by quantifying the popularity of artists via SNS receptions from around the world.

On the Billboard Social 50 chart on July 11, 2020, BTS came in the first place for the 186th time, followed by BLACKPINK who ranked 2nd, EXO who ranked 3rd, SEVENTEEN who ranked 4th, Red Velvet who ranked 5th, NCT 127 at 6th, NCT DREAM at 8th, EXO Baekhyun at 9th, and Stray Kids at 10th. Thus, most of the top 10 places were Kpop artists – a true testament to the shift in status of Kpop.

The Billboard Social 50 chart has not been updated since December 26, 2020, when BTS won its 210th No. 1 and succeeded in charting for 219 weeks. Regarding this lack of update, the Billboard Music Publishing Department said: “We are discussing reorganizing the Billboard Social 50 chart through a new data partner and no specific date has been announced yet, but Billboard expects a reboot in early 2021.”

Since then, a new type of chart that follows the Billboard Social 50, has been attracting attention again, and it’s none other than the Billboard Hot Trending Songs, powered by Twitter.

This new chart is a real-time one that ranks the most frequently mentioned songs on Twitter, and is divided into two detailed charts: a real-time chart based on the last 24 hours and a weekly chart including the period from Friday to Thursday next week, based on the last 7 days.

From this, Billboard makes the most of Twitter in delivering real-time chart news, with mentions, hashtags, and interactions with the artists’ account being added to the entry or re-entry rankings of singers.

As a result, even now, the presence of Kpop artists are remarkable on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart.

As of June 8th, 2022, it is no exaggeration to say that the Billboard Hot Trending Songs Chart was simply occupied by Kpop. In both the real-time and weekly charts, releases from Kpop artists dominated at least 7 songs in the top 10.

In particular, on the real-time charts, BTS’s title track “Yet to Come” (The Most Beautiful Moment) from their new album “Proof” topped the charts with an overwhelming number of tweets. Meanwhile, BTS Jimin’s first OST “With You” ranked 2nd, SEVENTEEN’s “Hot” ranked 3rd, BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s solo song “Lalisa” ranked 4th, while NCT Dream’s “Beatbox” came in 5th.

On the weekly chart, the presence of BTS member Jin’s two solo songs “Yours” and “Super Tuna” was still outstanding until recently.  They managed to come in 4th and 5th, amid the overwhelming strength of BTS Jimin’s “With You”, GOT7’s “Nanana”, BamBam’s “Wheels Up”, Lisa’s “Lalisa”, and BTS V’s “Christmas Tree”, which landed in 1st, 6th, 9th, 10th, and 12th, respectively. BTS’s newest title scored the 2nd position, while the 3rd place was still occupied by SEVENTEEN’s “Hot”.

Since BTS’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 as a Kpop singer made headlines on the official Billboard chart’s Twitter account, interest in the first week of album entry has risen. ARMYs (fandom of BTS), continue to make active tweets, which contributes to BTS’s rise on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart.

This strong Kpop trend on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart is expected to continue for a while.
