BLACKPINK Jennie remains silent in face of criticism about HBO’s The Idol

Jennie, a member of girl group BLACKPINK, has not responded to the mounting criticism about her acting debut in the HBO series “The Idol”.

When HBO’s miniseries “The Idol” aired its first episode on June 4 after the premiere at “Cannes International Film Festival”, HBO actively shared snippets and image teasers to build anticipation for the series. At the same time, the cast, including Lily-Rose Depp, The Weeknd, and Troye Sivan, also eagerly gave updates about their latest series project.

Jennie remained with no updates related to the series at all. Her most recent update was an apology to fans about why she abruptly left the stage during the “BORN PINK” concert in Melbourne. Despite the growing criticism towards “The Idol” and Jennie herself, the BLACKPINK rapper did not seem to have any reaction to it.

From Jennie’s standpoint, she might be in a difficult situation. A news report revealed Jennie took up the role thanks to her connection to The Weeknd, who is also a producer of the series. Moreover, as her role remains minor, it may not be in her best of her interest to speak up about the ongoing drama. At present, it seems like silence is the best policy.

However, as an influential idol in Korea, the public expects to see her stance on the situation, and they are demanding it quickly.

It has become an unspoken rule in the idol world that, if there is a controversy, an idol must issue an informal apology within 48 hours. However, when the scandals about “The Idol” broke out, she chose to remain silent as a way to show her independence from her company, YG Entertainment.

When Jisoo first debuted as an actress in “Snowdrop”, she came across a series of criticism relating to the drama. Nonetheless, she chose to not speak up as a way to affirm her independence as an artist and hoped to restructure the relationship between an artist, his or her company, and the audience.

Despite everything, Jisoo never stopped sharing about “Snowdrop”. The idol-actress happily posted photos with her co-star, Jung Hae In, as well as interesting behind-the-scenes shots on the filming set. However, Jennie seemed to have separated herself entirely from her role as “Dyanne”. She did interviews and one appearance at Cannes, but her SNS feed is completely clear of anything “The Idol” related.

Jisoo constantly posted about “Snowdrop” despite controversies, whilst Jennie stayed silent as “The Idol” aired

It is likely that even after “The Idol” concluded, Kpop fans would not stop criticizing Jennie. However, even if Jennie was wrong in selecting her acting debut, it is ultimately her choice whether to apologize, who to apologize to, and what she’d apologize for.

All in all, it is within Jennie’s right to keep her silence. Her silence would raise speculations, but as long as it keeps people talking, it continues to prove her standing in the industry and benefits her project.
