“Pyramid Game” Will be The Next “Squid Game”, predicted BBC

The overseas praise for the drama "Pyramid Game" continues

TVING’s original series “Pyramid Game” (written by Choi Soo-i, directed by Park So-yeon), which was first released on February 29th, is attracting hot attention not only in Korea but also overseas. It has captured the attention of viewers worldwide with its solid world view and the active performances of rookie actors.

“Pyramid Game” tells the story of an all-girls high school where popularity polls are used to rank students in class, and the differential treatment leads to school violence. Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the series provides thrilling catharsis through the brain battles and psychological warfare among students.

In particular, the BBC in the UK drew attention by analyzing the reasons why “Pyramid Game” is arousing global interest.

First, they introduced “Pyramid Game” as “the only K-content invited to this month’s ‘Series Mania’ festival and the new ‘Squid Game“, saying, “‘Squid Game’ and ‘Pyramid Game’ are unique in giving audiences around the world a glimpse into some of the real-life circumstances many in South Korea live in.”

Film critic Nemo Kim, in an interview with the BBC, analyzed, “The themes of both works are all too familiar. It’s important to note that for South Koreans, the debt-ridden circumstances of the contestants in ‘Squid Game’ are not something that only exist in a fictional dystopian world. We could argue that many people around the world suffer from similar situations, but South Korea is notorious for its lack of job security. The school setting of ‘Pyramid Game’ is the same. South Korean schools are notorious for bullying between students, and we’ve also had several teachers committing suicide at school due to harassment from parents and students.

Sociologist and author Nancy Wang Yuen pointed out, “Audiences like series such as ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Pyramid Game’ because the violence is part of a game – and that makes it easier to watch. The fact that these are predicated on games rather than pure evil or unknown factors makes them more digestible.”

In this regard, a TVING official stated, “Based on the praise from foreign media and festival audiences, we expect ‘Pyramid Game’ to create another sensation following ‘Bargain’ and ‘Death’s Game’.

“Pyramid Game” has currently released up to 6 episodes.
