Actress Kang Soo Yeon passed away 2 days after cardiac arrest

The actress was hospitalized on May 5th and passed away on May 7th, after needing to use a ventilator. 

According to SPOTV News, actress Kang Soo Yeon passed away on May 7th at the age of 56, after being sent to the hospital in an unconscious state. Following the actress’s death, her friends in the industry, led by the former chairman of Busan International Film Festival, Kang Ho Dong, set out to organize her funeral. The ceremony was held on the second floor of the funeral house at Samsung Seul Medical Center

The actress was hospitalized in the evening of May 5th following a cardiac arrest. Her family discovered Soo Yeon unconscious in her house, dialed emergency, and got the actress taken to Severance Hospital in Gangnam Seoul. She remained unresponsive for two days, and had to use life support. 

Born in 1966, Kang Soo Yeon was a powerful figure in the Korean film industry during the early 90s. She was also the first Korean to receive a grand prize at international grounds, having been named the Best Leading Actress at the 1987 Venice International Film Festival thanks to her performance in “The Surrogate Woman”.  This movie, which was produced in 1986, was produced by the legendary director Im Kwon Taek.

Two years later, Kang Soo Yeon was once again awarded as Best Leading Actress in the 16th Moscow International Film Festival. This time, she also collaborated with director Im Kwon Taek in the movie “Come Come Upward”. Her influence and prestige in the film industry has led to her becoming the co-director of Busan International Film Festival from 2015 to 2017.

Before her passing, Kang Soo Yeon had finished filming for her comeback work “Jung_E”. This was supposed to be her first work after 10 years of absence from acting.
