Biography

Song Yuqi, known mononymously as Yuqi, is a Chinese singer, songwriter, dancer, and record producer. She is a member of the South Korean girl group I‑dle (formerly stylized as (G)I-DLE), formed by Cube Entertainment. In addition to her group activities, Yuqi has appeared on South Korean and Chinese television shows and made her solo debut with the extended play Yuq1 in 2024.

Early Life and Education

Yuqi was born Song Yuqi on September 23, 1999, in Beijing, China. She attended Beijing 101 Middle School during her youth before pursuing a career in entertainment. In 2015, she auditioned for Cube Entertainment at the Beijing Station of the Cube Star World Audition, performing covers of popular songs, which led to her selection as a trainee with the company.

Yuqi later moved to South Korea in 2016 to train under Cube Entertainment. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese (her native language), Korean, and English, and is known for her strong language skills among international idols.

Career

Debut with (G)I-DLE (2018–present)

Yuqi was introduced as the first confirmed member of the girl group (G)I-DLE on April 8, 2018. The group officially debuted on May 2, 2018, with their first extended play I Am and the lead single “Latata,” marking Yuqi’s official entry into the K-pop industry.

As part of I-dle, Yuqi has served as one of the group’s main vocalists, main dancers, and rappers, contributing to the group’s dynamic performances and global recognition. I-dle is praised for its self-producing capabilities and diverse musical styles, with Yuqi actively participating in live performances, variety appearances, and promotional activities with the group.

Solo Activities and Variety Work

In addition to group activities, Yuqi has appeared on a number of Korean variety and entertainment shows, showcasing her personality and language skills. She was cast in the long-running Chinese variety show Keep Running and hosted the KakaoTV reality series Learn Way from 2020 to 2021.

Solo Music Career (2021–present)

Yuqi made her first solo debut on May 13, 2021, with the single album A Page, which featured the tracks “Giant” and “Bonnie and Clyde.” She later expanded her solo discography with the extended play Yuq1, released on April 23, 2024, featuring singles such as “Could It Be” and “Freak.”
